Charpa Falls: The Waterfall Right Beside The Road

Charpa Falls on the Athirappilly-Valparai Road

No trek, no ticket — just pull over and feel the spray of Charpa Falls between Athirappilly and Vazhachal.

Between Athirappilly and Vazhachal the road bends, crosses a small bridge, and suddenly there is a waterfall almost on top of you. That is Charpa.

What makes it special

Unlike most falls, Charpa needs no walking at all. The water drops down the rock face right beside the road, and in the monsoon the spray drifts across the bridge.

When to go

June to October is when Charpa is at its loudest. By March it shrinks to a few thin streams.

Tips

  • Park only where the road widens; the stretch is narrow and buses use it.
  • Do not climb the rocks — they are slippery and the forest department warns against it.
  • Combine it with Athirappilly and Vazhachal in one trip.
