The former palace grounds were transformed into an elephant camp, giving rise to the name Anakkotta, which translates to Elephant Fort.
Over time, Punnathur Kotta became closely associated with the elephants that participate in Guruvayur Temple's religious ceremonies and festivals. The compound also includes a shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Bhagavathy. The location has a connection with Malayalam cinema as well. Scenes from the historical film Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha, starring Mammootty, were filmed here. Punnathur Kotta is situated in Kottapadi, near Guruvayur, in Thrissur district, Kerala. It is approximately 2–3 km from Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple and around 30 km from Thrissur town by road. Visitors can reach the destination by car, taxi or auto-rickshaw from Guruvayur. Guruvayur Railway Station is the nearest railway station.
