Sunset And Sea Breeze At Snehatheeram Beach
A slow evening at Thalikulam's beach park — gardens, rock-lined shore and one of the best sunsets on the Thrissur coast.
Most people think of temples and festivals when they hear Thrissur, but the district also has a long, quiet coastline. The best place to start exploring it is Snehatheeram Beach at Thalikulam, about an hour from Thrissur town. We drove down on a weekday afternoon, reached by four, and stayed until the last light faded over the sea.
Snehatheeram is not a wild, empty beach — and that is exactly why families love it. The tourism department has built a neat beach park along the shore, with paved walkways, lawns, benches under casuarina trees and a play area for children. A traditional gateway welcomes you in, and from there it is a short walk to the sand.
Part of the shore is protected by large granite boulders, which make a great perch for photos. On the open sand the colour turns golden-orange in the evening light, and the waves roll in gently on most days outside the monsoon.
Evenings are the highlight. Plan to arrive an hour before sunset so you can walk the full length of the park before the crowd settles in. October to March brings clear skies and calm sea; during the monsoon the beach is dramatic but the water is rough and access to the shore may be restricted.
Snehatheeram is only a short drive from Thriprayar, home to the well-known Sree Rama temple on the banks of the Thriprayar river. Many travellers visit the temple in the morning, have lunch in town and reach the beach in time for sunset — an easy, relaxed day out from Thrissur.
