Thanjavur was the capital of the great Chola kings, and the Brihadeeswarar Temple built by Rajaraja Chola I is its crowning monument. The temple is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Great Living Chola Temples.
The town is also known for Thanjavur paintings, the Thanjavur Maratha Palace and the Saraswathi Mahal Library. Within the district, Kumbakonam is famous for its many temples and its degree coffee.
