Hornbills And Macaques On The Charpa Forest Stretch

Wildlife Spotting at Charpa Forest: Hornbills and Macaques

The forest around Charpa is part of the Vazhachal forest division — keep your eyes on the canopy.

The road past Charpa runs through the Vazhachal forest division, one of the richest riverine forests in Kerala. Slow down and the wildlife starts to show itself.

What we saw

A pair of great hornbills flew across the road just after the bridge — the wingbeats are loud enough to hear. Further on, a troop of macaques sat on the parapet watching the cars.

Birding tips

  • Early morning (before 8 am) is best for hornbills.
  • Bring binoculars; most birds stay high in the canopy.
  • Stay in your vehicle where elephants are reported — forest staff post warnings.

Respect the forest

Do not feed the monkeys and do not leave plastic behind. The forest department checks vehicles at the Athirappilly check post.
