Thumboormuzhi River Garden: A Quiet First Stop On The Athirappilly Road

Thumboormuzhi River Garden on the Athirappilly Route

Lawns, river views and shade under old trees — why Thumboormuzhi is worth twenty minutes before the big falls.

Most people race past Thumboormuzhi on their way to Athirappilly. We stopped on the way in, mostly to stretch our legs, and ended up staying almost an hour.

The garden

The river garden runs along the Chalakudy river just below the old weir. Paths wind between lawns and big shade trees, and there are benches right at the water's edge. On a weekday morning it was almost empty.

Why stop here

  • It is right on the main road — no detour needed.
  • The river is wide and calm here, a nice contrast to the roaring falls later.
  • Clean toilets and a small snack stall near the entrance.

Good to know

Go early; tour buses start arriving after 11 am. Do not enter the water near the weir — the current is stronger than it looks.
