One of the best open views of the Chalakudy river is from the Vettilappara bridge, just before Athirappilly.
Just before the forest begins, the Athirappilly road crosses the Chalakudy river at Vettilappara. Most drivers do not slow down — but this bridge has one of the widest river views on the whole route.
The view
Upstream, the river comes out of the forested hills. Downstream, it spreads wide over rocks and sandbanks, with plantations on both banks.
When to stop
- Early morning, when mist lies on the water.
- After the monsoon, when the river runs full and brown.
Safety
There is no footpath on parts of the bridge. Park on the side road before the bridge and walk carefully.
